Antique Georgian Solid Mahogany Partners Desk Queen Anne Chippendale Style C1800

18th century
Description

Antique Georgian Partners Desk

A very unique large partners desk.

We are delighted to bring to you Georgian Mahogany partners desk of large proportions made with Queen Anne and Chippendale influences around C1800-1830.

This beautiful desk has a large single plank solid fiddle back Mahogany top which is ornately embellished with quarter bobbin turnings to the top's edge and all corners of the desk mimicking the Chippendale style. This very usable desk is ideal in a large office/study or open plan area due to its pleasing dummy drawers to the rear. The desk features 5 long smoothly operating solid Mahogany dovetail drawers to the front, complete with its original lightly polished original solid brass dropper handles. These drawers are ideal for storing, laptops and paperwork with the bonus of being able to lock all of the drawers via its brass locks behind its original ornate brass keyhole escutcheons via its original key.

This lovely desk shows its original polished finish with its idillic deep Mahogany colour with lots of beautifully worn patina and character. The desk has simple panelled sides and finishes to 4 simple Queen Anne legs with a shaped frieze between.

We have sympathetically restored this item maintaining original patina by just carefully waxing this item to enhance the French polished surface and preserve it for many years to come.

Please note; This item is in great condition for its age as shown by the photographs, however, being an antique item of this age there may be minor blemishes here and there which we feel adds to its originality and heritage of the piece. Also note this is a fixed desk and does not come apart so please ensure access is suitable.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian writing desks, popularised in 18th-century Britain, are defined by classical proportions, high-quality timber such as mahogany, and refined detailing including cabriole or tapered legs, pad or claw-and-ball feet, and brass bail handles.

Primary timbers like Cuban or West Indian mahogany were favoured for the exterior surfaces due to their density and rich grain, while secondary woods such as oak or pine were typically used for drawer linings and internal framework.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-cast brass hardware with natural oxidisation, unevenness on hand-planed secondary surfaces, and age-appropriate wear around foot bases and drawer runners.

Position the desk centrally in a room as a focal point, pairing it with contemporary leather seating, neutral wall finishes, and minimalist brass lighting to create a balanced blend of traditional and modern elements.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year, while avoiding direct exposure to sunlight, radiators, or moist environments.
