A Sutherland table is a form of compact drop-leaf table introduced in the 19th century and named after Harriet, Duchess of Sutherland. It features an exceptionally narrow central top with deep hinged leaves and pivoted legs that swing out to support the extended surface.

Victorian examples were predominantly crafted from hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood. They frequently featured figured walnut veneers on the tabletop, brass castors, and turned support legs connected by a central stretcher.

Authentic pieces feature hand-turned legs, original brass castors secured with steel screws, and natural wear around the drop-leaf hinges and swinging support legs. Genuine 19th-century construction exhibits traditional joinery beneath the frame and aged patina across the timber surface.

Position the table against a wall or behind a sofa with the leaves dropped to serve as a narrow console or side table. Extend one or both leaves when required to serve as a functional surface for drinks, books, or lighting.
