Description

Superb Sutherland table with fabulous barley twist supports, legs and stretcher from the fantastic Victorian era. It is of excellent quality and of neat proportion with a fantastic burr walnut top with satin wood and ebony inlays. The supports and legs terminate on original brass castors. Both leaves are supported by a gatelegs that can be used together or separately. Of solid construction with a gorgeous rich colour and fantastic graining ideal for occasional use and compact when folded. Like all antique furniture there are some imperfections however this is a stunning little table with many more years of use left.

Originating in the mid-nineteenth century, the Sutherland table is a specialized form of drop-leaf table named after Harriet, Duchess of Sutherland. It features a remarkably narrow fixed central section with deep falling leaves that expand to provide substantial surface area when required.

Victorian cabinetmakers primarily constructed Sutherland tables using fine hardwoods such as walnut, burr walnut, mahogany, and rosewood. These pieces frequently feature spiral barley-twist leg supports, decorative geometric inlays, and brass castors.

Authentic Victorian examples feature genuine timber veneers, period hand-cut joinery, original brass or ceramic castors, and characteristic leg turnings. The central fixed top section is noticeably narrower than standard gateleg or Pembroke tables.

Due to its slender profile when folded, a Sutherland table functions exceptionally well positioned at the end of a sofa, placed within a narrow hallway, or used as a flexible occasional side table in an alcove.

To preserve the timber veneer, dust the surface regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth. Apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish periodically to maintain the timber lustre, avoiding direct heat sources and strong sunlight.
