Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Sutherland table is a specific type of narrow drop-leaf table developed during the mid-19th century, named after the Duchess of Sutherland. It features hinged leaves that drop down to create a very slender profile when closed, making it a space-saving occasional table.

Victorian Sutherland tables were typically constructed from high-grade hardwoods, predominantly walnut, burr walnut, mahogany, and rosewood. The tops often featured figured veneers, while the structural frames used solid turned legs, central stretchers, and brass or ceramic castors.

Authentic 19th-century Sutherland tables can be identified by their narrow central top section, deep drop leaves supported by pivoted gate-legs or swing brackets, original brass or ceramic castors, hand-cut joinery, and period-correct timber cut like burr walnut veneer.

In modern interiors, a Sutherland table works effectively as a narrow console behind a sofa or against a hallway wall when folded. When extended, it serves as a flexible coffee table, tea table, or flexible display surface for lamp lighting and books.

Burr walnut surface veneers should be kept away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent cracking and fading. Maintain the finish by wiping dust with a soft microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year in the direction of the grain.
