Victorian Mahogany Open Armchair

19th century
Description

Victorian mahogany open armchair

This superb Victorian mahogany open armchair was made circa 1860.

This example is as good as you are likely to find with its buttoned spoon back and the open arms.

The carving is finer than you would usually expect to find on other chairs of this type.

Having a beautifully carved top rail on the wooden frame, the spoon back shape runs down to the padded armrest and the flowing arm supports with the wonderful carving.

The finely carved cabriole front legs are joined by the serpentine front rail that again has fine quality carving.

Imagine this wonderful chair in your home and sitting back and relaxing into it.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian open armchair features exposed carved timber arm supports with open space beneath the armrests, typically crafted in dark hardwoods like mahogany or rosewood with padded upholstery.

Victorian armchairs were constructed using solid mahogany, walnut, or rosewood frames, combined with traditional coil springs, natural hair padding, and wool velvet or silk upholstery fabrics.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved detail work, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, original brass castors, deep button tufting, and smooth patination across the polished timber frame.

Position the armchair as a focal point in a reading corner, study, or living space, pairing rich wood and velvet tones against neutral walls and contemporary side lighting.

Maintain timber by dusting regularly and applying natural beeswax polish, while protecting velvet upholstery by light vacuuming with a soft brush attachment and keeping out of direct sunlight.
