Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century open armchair typically features upholstered seat and back sections with exposed timber arm supports rather than fully enclosed sides. This construction provides a lighter visual silhouette while retaining substantial proportions and comfort.

These chairs were commonly constructed with dense hardwood frames such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood. Internal cushioning relied on natural materials including coil springs, horsehair padding, jute webbing, and heavy cotton canvas under-upholstery.

Authentic pieces often display hand-turned timber legs, period brass castors with stamped makers marks, traditional hand-stitched webbing underneath, and evidence of hand-carved detailing on exposed wood supports.

An oversized armchair works well as a focal accent piece in a contemporary sitting room, reading nook, or bedroom. Pairing tailored stripe or neutral upholstery with modern minimalist decor creates a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern lines.

Keep the armchair away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage and fabric fading. Gently vacuum the upholstery with a soft brush attachment and treat exposed woodwork with high-grade beeswax polish.
