Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian ebonised and lacquered seating gained popularity in the mid-to-late 19th century, drawing inspiration from Japonisme and Gothic revival styles. The wood was treated with dark stains or black lacquer to imitate expensive ebony, frequently accented with detailed hand-carving, pierced scrollwork, and elegant padded upholstery.

These frames were typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as beech, walnut, or mahogany, which were then ebonised or ebonised and lacquered. The upholstery traditionally used natural stuffing materials like horsehair and jute webbing, supported by steel coil springs and finished with brass castors.

Authentic pieces feature traditional joinery, such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, along with natural wear on the ebonised finish where hands rested. Check beneath the seat frame for period-correct webbing, original brass castor fittings, and aged wooden construction underneath the upholstery.

Ebonised furniture provides visual contrast in contemporary spaces. A pair of dark lacquered armchairs can be placed on either side of a fireplace, integrated into a home office, or used as accent seating in a living room paired with modern architectural lighting.

Dust the lacquered wooden frame regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or excess water which can cloud the finish. Vacuum the fabric gently using an upholstery attachment and keep the chairs away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and fabric fading.
