Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Characterised by clean profiles, rounded upper corners, and squared lower corners, Louis Philippe style mirrors emerged during the mid-19th century in France. They typically feature gold leaf or silver leaf finishes over gesso and wood mouldings, often embellished with subtle floral motifs.

These mirrors were constructed using solid softwood frames coated with layers of gesso plaster. Gold leaf was applied using traditional water gilding or oil gilding techniques, paired with glass silvered using mercury or silver nitrate.

Authentic period examples feature hand-planed wood backboards, natural foxing or oxidisation spots on the mirror glass, and natural wear on the gilding that reveals the reddish clay bole base layer beneath.

A gilded mirror can be positioned above a fireplace, placed over a dining room sideboard, or leaned against a focal wall to introduce warm metallic tones and texture in contrast with contemporary furnishings.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre feather duster. Avoid liquids, water, or commercial cleaners on the frame, as moisture can dissolve the traditional gesso and lift the gold leaf.
