Tea tables emerged in the early 18th century alongside the rising popularity of tea drinking in European high society. Designed specifically for social tea rituals, these tables frequently featured fold-over or tray tops and were crafted to be easily moved into the centre of a drawing room.

Georgian tea tables were predominantly constructed from dense imported mahogany or walnut. Traditional cabinetmaking techniques included hand-cut dovetail joints on interior drawers, wooden gate-leg or swing-leg support mechanisms, and solid brass cast hardware.
