North-west Persian Tribal Rug, Circa 1880, 2.74m X 1.11m

19th century
Description

This lovely rug was woven by the Shahsavan tribal weavers of North-West Persia, and dates to around 1880.The Shahsavan are better known for their soumac weaving, in particular their soumac saddlebags and cargo bags. But in the 19th century they also wove some wonderful piled rugs. This piece is a fine example. Woven on a wool foundation, the weave is fine and the wool is soft and glossy. The formal design of rows of stylised botehs is beautifully executed in subtle colours including the sapphire blue background and earthy shades of terracotta, yellow, browns and light blues. Random geometric ornaments fill some of the space between the botehs in a charming way. The geometric ivory border forms a perfect frame for this composition. The rug has survived in very good condition. The original ends and selvages are intact. The pile is generally good and even with some minor corrosion to the brown in a few places. The format also supports its nomadic origin, a size often seen in domestic tribal weavings. This rug should appeal to both collectors and interior designers. Professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

North-West Persian tribal rugs are renowned for their bold geometric motifs, rich vegetable dyes, and hand-woven wool construction, reflecting the nomadic weaving traditions of the region during the late Victorian era.

These rugs were crafted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the warp and weft foundation, coloured with natural vegetable and mineral dyes.

Authentic pieces feature natural abrash colour variations, slight geometric irregularities in the hand-woven knotting, soft aged wool texture, and flexible wool foundations rather than rigid synthetic backings.

A Persian tribal runner adds warmth, history, and texture to entryways, hallways, or narrow corridors, balancing contemporary minimalism with rich heritage pattern.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush, prompt spot cleaning with cold water, and using a quality underlay will preserve the wool fibres and structural integrity.
