Resting by the River, Ca 1900, French Barbizon Style Landscape with Figures Oil on Canvas

1900 - 1920
Description

A lovely and serene landscape, in which two figures a contemplating the river from the riverbank and the bridge. Dating from circa 1890-1900, the painting is unsigned, but is certainly a work by the French artist Alphonse Marx, from whose studio it was acquired.

While Marx is highly reputed and he exhibited at the Paris Salon, very little is known about his life. This is probably because he used Marx as a pseudonym, his family name having been Isaac.

Measuring 33 x 46 cm, our oil on canvas is presented in a period frame. The overall framed size is 42 x 56 cm.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in mid-19th-century France, the Barbizon movement marked a shift towards tonalism and plein-air painting, capturing realistic rural scenery and natural light without classical idealisation.

Artists during this era predominantly painted with hand-mixed or tubed oil pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, often prepared with a gesso ground.

Authentic paintings from this period often display natural age-related craquelure, subtle surface oxidisation, hand-carved stretcher bars, and organic brushwork characteristic of direct observation.

A classic landscape artwork can be styled above a sideboard or console table, integrated into a gallery wall, or hung within contemporary spaces to provide architectural contrast and warmth.

To preserve canvas art, avoid hanging it in direct sunlight or high-humidity areas, dust gently with a soft dry brush, and consult a professional restorer for varnish cleaning or re-tensioning.
