Introduced during the mid-nineteenth century, the Sutherland table is named after Harriet, Duchess of Sutherland. Designed as a compact variant of the drop-leaf table, it features narrow fixed centre tops and deep drop leaves, making it suitable for serving tea in space-conscious Victorian parlours.

These tables are commonly constructed using solid walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, frequently faced with highly figured burr walnut veneers. Construction involves turned dual column end-supports, a central turned stretcher, hinged gate legs, and small ceramic or brass castors.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display period joinery such as hand-cut dovetails beneath the frame, original ceramic or stamped brass castors, genuine patination on the turned timber legs, and natural surface wear around the gate-leg pivots.

Due to its narrow depth when folded, a Sutherland table functions as an occasional side table placed alongside a sofa or within a hallway. Extending the drop leaves quickly creates an additional display or serving surface for lamps, ceramics, and books.

Burr walnut requires protection from direct sunlight and radiator heat to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Periodic cleaning with a soft cloth and application of clear beeswax polish will maintain the lustre and protect the natural timber grain.
