Rosewood and Mop Writing Slope by George Austin, Dublin

Description

A fine rosewood writing slope attributed to George Austin of Dublin. This example doesn't have the makers label but we have handled this exact model previously and know it to be by Austin. Profusely inlaid with mother-of-pearl it opens to reveal three mother-of-pearl inlaid lidded compartments and a narrow pen tray. It retains it's original inkwells but sadly the tops are missing.

Size: 16." (41.3cm) wide x 11" (28cm) deep x 4" (10.2cm) high.

A writing slope is a portable wooden box featuring a sloped internal surface designed for writing letters while travelling or away from a dedicated desk. Popular during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these boxes housed inkwells, pens, paper, and writing instruments.

Victorian writing slopes were typically constructed from hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, often adorned with brass, ivory, or mother-of-pearl inlay. Internal compartments were usually lined with velvet, baize, or leather to protect writing implements.
