Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian card tables were designed during the 19th century as multi-functional reception pieces for morning and evening entertainment. Featuring a swivel and fold-over top, these tables rested against walls as console tables when closed and opened to support social card games.

These tables were commonly constructed using a solid pine or mahogany core veneered with high-grade rosewood or walnut. The interior game surface typically featured woven wool baize, while heavy carved elements on the frieze and base were hand-carved from solid timber.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on internal compartments, deep grain figure characteristic of Brazilian rosewood, and concealable brass castors beneath carved feet. The top mechanism generally swivels 90 degrees on a wooden pivot before unfolding.

When closed, the item functions as a hallway console or living room accent table beneath a mirror or framed artwork. The dark timber contrasts well against light neutral wall paint, providing a focal point in contemporary or eclectic spaces.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, cracking, or colour fading. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish along the grain annually, and clean interior baize fabric using a soft brush rather than liquid cleaners.
