The partnership of Camerer & Cuss (originally Camerer, Kuss & Co) is more commonly understood to have begun in 1788 and that they were responsible for introducing Black Forest cuckoo clocks and musical clocks to the UK. After a number of incarnations the firm became Camerer, Kuss & Co in 1868 where they continued to trade as importers of high quality German clocks for the English market and also makers of clocks in their own right. In 1914 the name Kuss was changed to Cuss as a result of the First World War and the feeling towards Germany at that point, thereafter all clocks were named to ''Camerer, Cuss & Co''. The firm continued to flourish in the UK and numerous addresses are published for the company.
If we start with the hood, this has swan necks with arched moulded cornice and is finished with brass pateras. Pretty Corinthian columns which terminate in brass capitals flank the hood door and there are back splats to the rear. To the sides of the hood are wonderful fretted panels lines in fabric which allow the sound of the chimes to pass nicely from the case.
If we then move down to the trunk it has a wonderful full length door which is shaped to the top and has nicely shaped edges. The door is also complete with it''s lock and key which is fully working. The trunk door is flanked by canted reeded corners. Finally the base has a lovely inset panel to the centre and is flanked by canted reeded corners and raised on a nicely shaped plinth.
The eight-day move
...ment is superb quality and is in working order. It has it''s original ''CAMERER, CUSS & CO 186, UXBRIDGE RD, LONDON. W12'' on the seat board.
The clock chimes the hours and either Westminster or Whittington chimes on the quarter hours in such a manner that it chimes a quarter of the tune at quarter past, half the tune at half past, three quarters of the tune at quarter to then the full tune on the hour followed by striking the hour. It also has a subsidiary second dial. The dial is a work of art in it''s own right with silvered chapter ring with large Arabic Numerals. The four corners are adorned with spandrels. The centre of the dial is the most intricate engravings and there had been exceptional attention to detail as can be seen from the photographs. The arch contains the dial to select between ''WHITTINGTON / WESTMINSTER'' these can be used to select the required chimes.
