French Summer Landscape - Antique Oil Painting

1940 - 1960
Description

Framed and signed oil on panel by the French artist Charles Betremieux (1919 - 1997) who was a creative artist. The painting shows a summer landscape with a fresh green palette. The painting is dated 1955 and mounted in a gilt and canvas frame with cream slip.

Betremieux was born in 1919 and was predominantly inspired by the 1930s. He studied at the Ecole Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes with Raymond Debieve where their work was quickly noticed and rewarded:

The period of the 1930s is characterised by the clashing of many political ideologies, including Marxist Socialism, Capitalist Democracy, and the Totalitarianism of both Communism and Fascism. Surrealism continued to dominate in Europe, and had influence internationally. Artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Riviera in Mexico, worked to integrate the ideas posed by Surrealism into their radical political ideologies, developing a new kind of magic realism.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-20th-century French landscape painting frequently incorporates elements of Post-Impressionism and Expressionism, focusing on expressive impasto brushwork, structured geometric compositions, and harmonious natural colour palettes depicting rural scenery.

Artists from this period typically applied oil pigments bound with drying oils onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, artist board, or wooden panels using bristle brushes and palette knives.

Authenticity is determined by evaluating artist signatures, period-appropriate stretcher or backing construction, age-related paint surface craquelure, natural pigment oxidation, and historical gallery labels.

This artwork can serve as a focal point placed above a sideboard or mantelpiece, where its muted green tones complement natural wood furniture, neutral walls, and minimalist contemporary decor.

Preserve the painting by hanging it away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity, dusting the surface occasionally with a soft, dry camel-hair brush without applying liquid solvents.
