Antique Kazak Rug

19th century
Description

A lovely rare small format antique Kazak rug, woven in the late 19th century and in honest good condition.  We love the ivory border design, really lifts the palette on this traditional geometric pattern. Great pale blue dyes and small soft yellow dyes can be seen too.  Kazak weavers used lush soft wool, and often had a thicker pile than other Caucasian rugs such as Shirvan or Talish.

Rugs bearing the name Kazak come from the highland area of the Caucasus in Azerbaijan whose centre is the town of Kazak. Woven by semi-nomadic shepherds of the region. They use fabulous vegetable dyes and high quality hand spun wool from their own herd.  Depending on the weave some Kazak rugs can be extremely soft to handle as the wool is light and woven on a supple foundation.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kazak rugs are hand-knotted tribal textiles traditionally crafted by nomadic weavers in the Caucasus region, characterised by bold geometric motifs and vibrant natural dyes.

These textiles feature hand-spun wool pile knotted onto a wool foundation, using natural plant and mineral dyes to achieve rich primary colours.

Authentic examples display slight asymmetry in their geometric patterns, natural colour variations known as abrash, and a heavy, hand-knotted wool construction visible on the reverse side.

The bold geometric patterns and strong primary tones work effectively as a focal point in contemporary, bohemian, or traditional interiors, anchoring neutral floor surfaces.

Regular gentle suction vacuuming without a rotating brush bar, prompt spot cleaning with mild liquid soap, and professional specialist washing ensure long-term preservation.
