Antique Caucasian Karachov Prayer Rug

19th century
For Sale by Siez Gallery
Description

This well-structured Karachov Kazak rug shows exceptional use of spacing and colour. The ivory mihrab in the centre matches well with the soft red around it, and although it is not the most densely decorated piece, this helps points to the age of this rug. The generous spacing draws attention to the traditional motifs. Some of patterns, like the hooked boxes, shows signs of wear, but that is to be expected on a rug woven in the mid 19th century. You can find this exact piece displayed in Brian McDonald's Book 'Treasures of the Black Tent' on page 243 - colour plate 186.

Size: 148cm x 107cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karachov rugs originate from the southwestern Caucasus region and are characterised by bold geometric forms, central medallions, and an architectural prayer arch or mihrab structure.

These rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun local wool for both the pile and the underlying warp and weft foundation, tinted with natural vegetable dyes.

Authentic Caucasian rugs feature full-wool construction, hand-bound selvedges, slight colour variations known as abrash, and distinct tribal geometric motifs.

A geometric tribal rug can be placed as a central focal point on hard flooring or layered over neutral natural-fibre carpeting to introduce texture and historic pattern.

Suction vacuum regularly on a low setting without a rotating brush, turn the rug periodically to distribute foot traffic evenly, use a supportive rug pad, and engage specialist cleaners for stain removal.
