Fine Senneh Rug, West Persia, Circa 1890, 2.03m X 1.30m

Description

Senneh rugs are among the finest and most coveted Persian rugs of the 19th century. This fine silk-warped example is a joy to both look at and to handle. The wool is soft and velvety, while silk foundation gives the rug an additional fineness which enables one to fold it like a textile. Amazing! The classic Heratic design drawn in concentric hexagons of different colours is well-known. Here it is intricately but crisply drawn with great finesse. Outstanding is the honey yellow background colour of the field. Note the jewel-like sapphire spandrels and the lovely palmette border which frames the composition perfectly. The colours are so subtle and harmonious that one can image this fine Persian rug enhancing many decorative settings. Professionally cleaned, and in very good condition, this is a collectors' item.

Traditional Persian rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton or wool warp and weft, with yarns tinted using natural vegetable dyes.

Authentic pieces feature an exceptionally tight weave, low pile, clear detail visible on the reverse side, and classic repeating motifs like the Herati or concentric diamond patterns.
