French Chateau on the River Loire, 1928 French Impressionist Edmond Defonte Plein Air Oil on Panel

1900 - 1920
Description

Ever since selling a picture by Edmond Defonte back in 2018 (one of my first sales on this site!) I have been hoping to find another work by the artist. Born in 1862, Edmond Defonte studied with Joseph Blanc, Diogène Maillard, Emile Renard, Ulysse Butin and Hector Hanoteau. He became a member of the Society of French Artists in 1889 and also exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and at the Winter Salon until 1938.

One of the last true Impressionists, he captures light beautifully, translating it into exquisite colours. His paintings are rare, and so I was delighted to find this litte gem. Depicted is a 15th century French Chateau, most likely on the Loire river.

A small sketch, oil oil on board was certainly painted on the motif en plein air for the pleasure of the artist, and not intended to be sold. This theory is corroborated by paint spots on the back and some wear around the edges which make the work extremely personal. Signed and dated 1928 at the lower left, the painting measures 14 x 23 cm. Presented in a more recent frame, the overall size is 21 x 30 cm.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 20th-century French Impressionist landscapes focus on capturing natural light, weather conditions, and scenery through visible brushstrokes and balanced colour tones. Artists frequently painted directly outdoors to capture transient light effects upon the natural environment.

Artists during the 1920s frequently utilised portable wooden panels or small canvases treated with a gesso ground, applying oil paints with impasto techniques. Solid wood panels offered a stable, rigid support suitable for field work and outdoor painting excursions.

Authentic period artworks display appropriate aged support materials, natural surface craquelure, artist signatures or dates in paint, and evidence of historical oxidisation on the timber reverse. The painterly style features spontaneous brushwork rather than flat, modern reproduction prints.

Position the artwork as a focal point on a neutral wall or display it on a mantlepiece alongside contemporary ceramics for balanced visual contrast. Traditional oil paintings also integrate cleanly within gallery wall arrangements alongside architectural sketches and monochrome line drawings.

Keep the panel away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources to prevent timber warping or pigment loss. Dust gently using a dry, soft brush, avoiding chemical solvents or water that could damage the delicate varnish layer.
