Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Emerging during Napoleon Bonapartes reign in the early 19th century, French Empire furniture draws inspiration from ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian classical architecture. Console tables from this era typically feature symmetrical forms, heavy architectural silhouettes, flame mahogany veneers, dark marble tops, and gilt bronze mounts depicting classical busts or motifs.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilized flame mahogany or Cuban mahogany veneers applied over oak or pine carcases. The upper surfaces were fitted with thick slabs of marble, such as Saint Anne or Belgian Black marble, complemented by cast gilt bronze or brass mounts, caryatids, and architectural pilasters.

Authentic period examples feature hand-sawn timber framing, thick hand-cut veneers, cast-metal mounts with detailed hand-chasing, and original marble tops showing natural wear on the underside. Look for hand-cut dovetail joinery, period iron or brass fixings, and natural patination across the mahogany and metalwork.

Position the piece in an entryway, hallway, or formal drawing room to establish an architectural focal point. Balance the visual weight of the mahogany timber and dark marble top by hanging contemporary abstract art above or placing simple ceramic vessels on the surface.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax annually following the grain of the wood. Clean the marble top using a pH-neutral damp cloth, wiping spills immediately to prevent staining or etching of the stone surface.
