French Empire Marble Top Console Table

Description

An elegant French Empire period console having a Gris st Ann marble top veneered on oak in plum pudding mahogany with frieze drawer with working lock and key raised on tapered columns with exceptional quality gilt bronze bases and palmetto capitols raised on an inverted platform base retaining it’s original foxed mercury backed mirror plate

Circa 1800

There are signs of use and minor restoration to the platform base commensurate with age neither distracting or affecting

Originating during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte in the early 19th century, French Empire furniture draws heavy inspiration from Greco-Roman and Egyptian architecture. Key characteristics include symmetrical geometric forms, solid columnar supports, heavy base plinths, and classical brass or ormolu mounts.

These tables are primarily constructed from solid wood veneered with rich flame mahogany or rosewood. They routinely incorporate thick marble tops, mercury-silvered glass mirror backs, and gilded bronze or brass mounts shaped into classical motifs.
