Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Boulle work is a form of decorative marquetry created by inlaying brass and shell onto a substrate, pioneered by cabinetmaker Andre-Charles Boulle during the reign of Louis XIV. In clockmaking, this technique was widely revived during the 19th century for ornamental mantel and bracket clocks.

Traditional Boulle clocks feature brass or pewter inlay combined with tortoiseshell or coloured horn backgrounds. These cases are typically adorned with cast gilded bronze (ormolu) mounts and house mechanical clockworks behind porcelain or enamel dials.

Late 19th-century examples often feature cast brass or bronze ormolu mounts, cast bronze or enamel dials with Roman numerals, and stamped French movement maker marks on the back plate. The marquetry usually shows precise machine-cut brass set into polished faux or real tortoiseshell.

Position the clock as a focal decorative accent on a fireplace mantelpiece, marble console, or sideboard top. Pairing the ornate gold and red tones against minimalist wall surfaces creates a high-contrast classic look.

Dust the case gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals that could loosen the glue underneath the brass inlay. Mechanical clockwork movements should be lubricated and serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
