Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century writing desks, particularly those inspired by Regency and Sheraton designs, are characterised by structured symmetry, classical proportions, and specialized functional compartments. Common features include kidney-shaped or rectangular silhouettes, raised superstructures with small drawers or cubbies, and inset leather writing surfaces.

These desks were typically constructed from solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, often accented with satinwood stringing or crossbanding. Drawer linings were commonly made of oak or mahogany with hand-cut dovetail joints, while writing surfaces featured gold-tooled leather.

Authentic Gillows furniture often features a stamped maker mark on the drawer edges, underside, or locks, reading GILLOWS or GILLOW & CO. Additionally, high-grade timber, precision dovetail joinery, smooth drawer operation, and original brass hardware indicate authentic production from the firm.

An antique writing desk can be positioned in a home office, library, or living room window bay to serve as a functional focal point. Pairing the warm timber tones with modern task lighting and a neutral contemporary chair creates a balanced scheme.

Maintain the mahogany timber by applying high-grade beeswax along the grain and buffing gently. Clean the gold-tooled leather insert using a soft, dry cloth, avoiding harsh liquid cleaners, and keep the desk away from direct sunlight or heat sources to prevent cracking and fading.
