Rams Head Antiques is a family business based in Wolsingham in Weardale where we have had shop premises for 28 years. The shop is generally open every Saturday from 11 am till 3 pm.

Victorian Art Nouveau gilt frames feature organic, stylised motifs such as flowing foliage, vines, and curved linear patterns inspired by nature. Produced around the turn of the 20th century, these frames combine late Victorian ornate moulding techniques with the fluid forms of the Art Nouveau movement.

These frames typically consist of a pine or lime wooden core covered with compositiona mixture of chalk, resin, linseed oil, and glueto create detailed moulded patterns. Water gilding or oil gilding using thin gold leaf was then applied over a clay bole base.

Authentic frames exhibit natural signs of age, such as fine surface cracking in the composition moulding, wear revealing the reddish or yellow clay bole beneath the gold leaf, and traditional corner joinery visible from the back.

An empty antique gilt frame can be hung directly on a wall as a standalone sculptural feature or fitted with a modern mirror plate. Placing gilded elements against dark or contemporary neutral walls creates a balanced visual contrast.
