Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency dining chairs date from the early 19th century in Great Britain, influenced by classical Greek and Roman design principles. Key characteristics include clean proportions, dark hardwoods such as mahogany, turned or sabre legs, and ornate crest rails or carved splats.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, securing joints with hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery. Backs were frequently embellished with hand-carved scrollwork, while seats featured drop-in frames or stuffed-over upholstery using natural hair and webbing.

Authentic Regency chairs display signs of hand-planing, irregularity in turned components, and oxidation in unvarnished areas like drawer bases or underside frames. Original brass screws, hand-cut joinery marks, and natural age patina on the timber further confirm authenticity.

Pairing dark mahogany chairs with a contemporary minimalist table creates visual contrast through mixing textures and eras. Neutral wall palettes, natural light, and updated seat fabrics allow historical seating to serve as a focal point without overwhelming contemporary interiors.

Dust mahogany timber regularly using a soft microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice a year to preserve the wood finish. Keep furniture away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, joint loosening, and fabric fading.
