Tunbridge Ware is a form of decorated woodwork originating in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, during the 18th and 19th centuries. It is characterised by intricate mosaic patterns made from small wooden tesserae of naturally coloured native timber, arranged to form geometric borders, topographical views, or natural motifs.

Craftsmen used a variety of un-dyed native woods, such as holly, sycamore, walnut, plum, and yew, to achieve natural colour variations. Tiny triangular or square wooden strips were glued together into long blocks, cut crosswise into thin veneer sheets, and glued onto wooden base structures.

Authentic pieces rely on end-grain wood tesserae rather than painted or printed designs, showing visible grain variations under close inspection. Genuine items typically feature native English woods rather than heavily dyed foreign timber, exhibiting natural aged patina and minor surface craquelure in the original varnish.
