Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tunbridge ware is a traditional form of English decorative woodwork that originated around Tunbridge Wells in Kent. Popular throughout the Victorian period, it involves assembling thousands of tiny coloured wooden tesserae into detailed geometric or floral mosaic patterns, which are glued, sliced into thin veneers, and applied to wooden boxes, desk items, and small furniture.

Craftsmen used a wide variety of native and imported woods to achieve natural colour variations without synthetic dyes, including holly, yew, sycamore, cherry, walnut, and rosewood. The mosaic bands were created by gluing long triangular or square strips of wood into a master block, which was then cross-cut with a saw into thin mosaic veneers.

Authentic pieces feature end-grain mosaic tesserae rather than painted designs or modern printed paper overlays. Genuine 19th-century items display natural timber grain variations within each tiny geometric piece, characteristic cross-cut saw marks under magnification, and historical brass hardware such as original lock plates and hinges.

Small inlaid boxes function well on structured surfaces such as an office desk, coffee table, or bookshelf. They can be layered alongside modern stationery, leather accessories, or framed art to introduce historical texture and craftsmanship into contemporary interiors.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and humid environments to prevent veneer lifting or warping. Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a light coating of natural beeswax polish annually to protect the original finish.
