Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French 8-day mantel clock is a spring-driven mechanical timepiece produced in France designed to run for eight full days between windings. These timepieces typically feature brass cased housing, enamel dials, and pendulum-regulated movements.

Traditional French mantel clocks utilised cast or sheet brass for the casing, vitreous enamel over copper for the dial plate, and steel for arbor shafts and springs. Bevelled glass panels were often fitted to protect the dial face.

Authentic French movements often bear maker marks or stampings, such as movement serial numbers and medals from Paris exhibitions, on the rear brass backplate. Enamel dials typically display painted floral garlands or Roman and Arabic numerals alongside twin winding key holes.

Position the brass mantel clock centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece or console table to establish a symmetrical focal point. Pair it alongside contemporary glass or ceramic vessels to contrast metal textures against modern surfaces.

Dust the brass casing regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using abrasive liquid polishes that can strip original lacquer or patination. Enamel dials should be wiped gently with a dry cotton swab to prevent moisture entering the winding arbors.
