A French four-glass clock is a type of mantel timepiece originating in the mid-to-late 19th century, characterised by a brass frame enclosing four clear bevelled glass panels. This design allows full visibility of the internal mechanical movement and oscillating pendulum from all angles.

These timepieces are constructed primarily using solid cast brass for the case and movement plates, alongside thick bevelled plate glass panels. Dials often feature enamel cartouche numerals or gilded brass engraving, while pendulums frequently utilise vials containing mercury or steel rods for temperature compensation.

Authentic French pieces typically display maker stamps or medallion hallmarks on the rear plate of the movement, such as those from noted makers like A.D. Mougin or Japy Freres. Additionally, genuine examples feature hand-cut bevelled glass, heavy brass construction, and traditional pendulum suspension systems rather than modern battery components.

Position the clock as a focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or within a formal bookshelf arrangement. Its bright metallic finish and exposed mechanical structure complement both classic traditional decor and contemporary minimalist interiors where it serves as a sculptural accent.

Keep the clock free from dust by wiping the exterior glass and brass gently with a microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals or abrasive polish that could damage protective lacquer. The internal mechanical movement should be professionally serviced, oiled, and adjusted by a horologist every five to seven years.
