Set of Four Victorian Embossed Prints

19th century
Description

A highly decorative set of four Victorian prints of dead fish and game. The prints depict hanging game with two identical ducks, one fish and one brace of English partridge. The prints are quite remarkable in that they are lithographs that have then been embossed to give the creatures a three-dimensional look. The quality of the prints is excellent with some wonderful detail and all are in good condition with only the odd very minor mark. The set are framed in the original oak frames of Oxford design which work very well with the subjects and are all in good condition. The four make a dramatic decorative impact and are ready to hang. C.1880.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian embossed game prints are three-dimensional relief works on paper from the late 19th century, featuring raised depictions of hunted birds, fish, or wild game. They were popularised during the Victorian period as decorative artwork for dining rooms, hallways, and shooting lodges.

These prints were crafted by pressing damp, heavy-weight paper into deeply carved intaglio plates or metal dies to create a durable, raised relief motif. The raised images were then painted or printed with colour to enhance the illusion of texture and volume.

Authentic pieces feature crisp relief detail visible from both the front and back of the paper sheet, along with natural age-related toning. They are commonly housed in contemporary 19th-century frames, such as stained pine or oak Oxford frames with crossed corners.

Arrange them in a tight grid formation above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or along a hallway to create an authoritative focal point. They pair well with traditional timber furniture, leather upholstery, and neutral wool textiles.

Display the prints away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent paper foxing, warping, or fading of the pigments. Ensure the frames are securely backed to protect the delicate raised paper structures from moisture and atmospheric dust.
