An oleograph is a colour lithograph printed in oil pigments to imitate the texture and appearance of an original oil painting. Popular during the late nineteenth century, oleographs allowed widespread reproduction of genre scenes, portraiture, and landscapes for domestic display.

Oleographs were produced by printing multiple layers of colour onto paper or canvas using lithographic stones. The print was often varnish-coated to simulate brushstrokes and canvas grain, then mounted into heavy carved or moulded giltwood frames.

Authentic nineteenth-century oleographs lack modern digital print dots under magnification, instead showing continuous tone or fine lithographic grain. They often feature natural varnish yellowing, craquelure, and age-related oxidisation on the paper backing and gilt frame.

Position the framed artwork above a timber sideboard, chest of drawers, or mantelpiece to create a focal point. It can also be incorporated into a curated gallery wall alongside contrasting modern or traditional framed works.
