Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silhouette portraits became widely popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as an affordable alternative to painted oil portraits before the advent of commercial photography. Named after Etienne de Silhouette, these profile representations were created by cutting black paper or painting profile outlines directly onto card, glass, or plaster.

Traditional Victorian silhouettes were rendered using black ink, watercolour, or cut black paper mounted onto cream cardstock. Highlights were often added using gold leaf or fine paint strokes, and the finished pieces were framed using solid woods or veneers such as rosewood, mahogany, or papier-mache, often accented with a gilded slip.

Authentic period silhouettes exhibit natural age-related toning, foxing, or darkening of the paper substrate. Look for hand-rendered bronzed or gold details along the hair and clothing, as well as original period frames showing authentic construction characteristics like mitred corners, hand-cut glass, and wood backing boards.

Small silhouette portraits function well when grouped on a gallery wall alongside varied artwork, framed photos, or wall-mounted curiosities. Alternatively, place the piece upright on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or desk lean-stacked against larger art objects to add historical contrast to modern decor.

Display paper silhouettes away from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent fading, paper degradation, and frame veneer lifting. Clean the exterior glass gently using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh liquid cleaners that could seep behind the frame border.
