During the 18th and early 19th centuries, patch boxes were used to hold fabric face patches made of silk or velvet, which were applied to conceal skin blemishes or convey subtle social messages. They were frequently gifted as romantic tokens or souvenirs.

These items were constructed from thin copper forms coated in opaque white glaze, kiln-fired, and then hand-painted with coloured enamels and inscriptions before receiving metal mounts and hinges.
