Antique Sarouk Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

Classical antique Sarouk rug, using an intricate all over design of floral bunches, well drawn and with subtle pink to peach tones for the main field colour.    Deep royal blue dyes used for the border and hints of teal blues and golds too.  Sarouk's were woven in the village of Saruk in the Arak region of Persia.  In good pile all over with an excellent soft handle and feel, it has been washed by our workshop and ready to be used.

Sarouk rugs have been produced for much of the 20th century. The early successes of the Sarouk rug are largely owed to the American market. From the 1910s to 1950s, the "American Sarouk", also known as the "painted Sarouk", was produced.  American customers had an affinity for the Sarouk’s curvilinear and floral designs. What they did not appreciate, however, was the colour, so for much of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, rugs exported from Persia were dyed to a desirable, deep, raspberry-red colour, once they arrive in the USA.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets and rugs in your own home, a free, no obligation service we have offered for over 30 years.  Roderic, Stephen and Kristian have been working with antique rugs since 1990 and would be delighted to help you find the perfect rug.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sarouk rugs originate from the Markazi province in western Iran, produced primarily from the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth century. These carpets are distinguished by dense floral patterns, durable wool, and characteristic dusky rose, terracotta, and deep blue colour palettes.

These carpets are hand-knotted using wool pile tied onto a cotton warp and weft foundation. The weave utilizes asymmetric knots, creating a dense pile with high thread count and precise detail.

Authentic Sarouk rugs feature a dense wool pile, flexible foundation, and hand-knotted back detailing without synthetic backing. Many early twentieth-century examples display detached floral sprays set against a rose or terracotta field surrounded by a multi-banded border.

An antique rug serves as a foundational focal point when paired with neutral upholstery or layered over natural fibre floor coverings. The dark blue and terracotta tones complement dark wood furniture, leather seating, and contemporary interior schemes.

Vacuum regularly without using a rotating brush bar to prevent fibre damage. Professional hand-washing by a textile specialist is recommended, along with rotating the carpet periodically to ensure even wear and light exposure.
