We sell mechanical watches and clocks as working functioning time pieces, rather than simply an antique or collectable object. The clocks or watches will need a few days to settle following transit. Antique movements are fragile and can easily be damaged due to mishandling or dropping. We do not accept returns where there has been physical damage or the movement has been interfered with, altered, or taken apart. If your watch or clock arrives damaged following transit, these exclusions are irrelevant, but you must notify us immediately within 24hours of receiving the clock or watch if this is the case. All items are sold as seen.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian pole screen is a hearth accessory consisting of an adjustable panel mounted on a central vertical pole and tripod base. It was designed to shield occupants sitting near an open fire from excessive heat while protecting wax-based cosmetics from melting.

Pole screens were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut. The decorative central panels featured hand-worked needlepoint textiles, fine tapestries, painted silk, or stained glass within carved frames.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature hand-carved details, turned wood joinery, and functional brass screw mechanisms for height adjustment. Examining the reverse of the needlework panel often reveals period stitching techniques and subtle unevenness indicative of handcrafting.

Place a pole screen near a fireplace, beside an accent armchair, or in a vacant corner of a drawing room to serve as a decorative focal point. The delicate vertical profile makes it ideal for adding height and historical texture to formal or eclectic spaces.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and damp conditions to protect the textile fibres from fading and rot. Dust the carved wooden components with a dry microfibre cloth and gently brush the tapestry with a soft brush or low-suction vacuum using a mesh filter.
