Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, French foundries experienced a revival in producing cast bronze statuettes depicting historical, literary, and Renaissance figures. Advances in sand casting and lost-wax techniques allowed foundries to create highly detailed decorative sculptures for private residences.

These sculptures were cast in bronze, an alloy primarily composed of copper and tin, and finished with chemical patination to achieve dark brown or reddish tones. Foundries utilised lost-wax or sand-casting methods, often hand-chasing the bronze after casting to refine decorative details.

Authentic period pieces typically feature crisp detail in drapery and facial features, a well-developed patina consistent with age, and substantial weight. Many examples include foundry marks or signatures stamped near the base, along with traditional assembly cold-joins visible on the underside.

A patinated bronze statue can be placed on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or library bookshelf. Positioned against light neutral backdrops or dark timber panelling, it serves as a grounded sculptural focal point alongside books or modern ceramics.

Bronze surfaces should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth or fine brush. To protect the original patina from oxidation and moisture, a thin layer of microcrystalline wax can be applied periodically and buffed gently.
