New Forest, hampshire, 19th Century, landscape Oil, by Frederick Golden Short

19th century
Description

A fine small framed landscape oil painting on canvas of the new forest in hampshire with ponies

by Frederick Golden short .Signed and dated 85 lower right

The size being 23.5 x 38.5cm whilst overall it is 49 x34 cm

In overall very good condition having recently been cleaned.

It is said Exhibited paintings often had elaborate gilt frames as opposed to his local paintings which often had stained oak sometimes with a small gold slip. This would lead me to believe this painting has probably been exhibited at some point.

Frederick Golden Short

was a New Forest landscape painter in watercolour and oils. Golden Short lived in Lyndhurst, new forest hampshire and exhibited from 1882-1908. He was often seen riding his bicycle around the New Forest with his Windsor and Newton painting box.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century British landscape painting emphasised natural topography, atmospheric light, and countryside scenes. Artists frequently documented rural regions, woodland vistas, and changing seasons, moving away from idealised classical views toward regional observation.

Victorian landscape paintings were typically executed with oil pigments on stretched linen canvas or timber panels. Frames were predominantly crafted from wood moulded with plaster or composition ornament and finished with applied gold leaf.

Authentic period paintings show natural signs of age, including varnish oxidisation, uniform craquelure across the paint surface, and historical stretchers on the reverse. Period frames often display natural wear and darkening to the gilded finish.

Traditional oil paintings can be displayed above a fireplace mantel or positioned on a picture rail in contemporary spaces to create visual contrast. Juxtaposing an ornate gilded frame against neutral walls creates a distinct focal point.

Oil paintings should be kept away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources to prevent canvas warping. Dusting must be done gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or water on both canvas and frame.
