Victorian Octagonal Walnut Occasional Table

19th century
Description

A Very Good Quality Mid 19th Century Victorian Burr Walnut Occasional Table, Having Superbly Figured Octagonal Top, With Profuse Marquetry Inlaid Decoration And Elegant Shaped Frieze, Raised Twisted, Turned Cenral Column Terminating On Moulded Tripod Legs.

Very typical in style for the mid victorian era this attractive little table is better quality than most and has a real elegant feel to it. The elegance is further enhanced by the attractive inlaid decoration to the top, which has been extremely well executed and also by the unusual little shaped frieze underneath the top. The twisted stem is another attractive, unusual feature.

Overall the condition is good and the table has clearly been well loved throughout it’s life. Before being offered for sale it has been through our workshops for a clean and natural wax polish in the traditional fashion to ensure it is ready to be placed straight into the home.

A useful little size this table could be used in a whole variety of different positions around the home, from being a useful little bedside table, to being a simple lamp table tucked away in the corner of the living room, or even as an additional prop in the home office or similar.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian occasional tables typically feature compact proportions, intricate wood turning, and decorative tops designed for flexible placement within 19th-century reception rooms.

Craftsmen primarily utilised dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, often incorporating decorative veneers, marquetry inlay, and hand-carved barley twist or turned pedestals.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved spiralled turning, period-appropriate joinery beneath the top, and natural age-related patina on the timber surfaces.

Position the piece beside an armchair or within a reading corner to serve as an accent stand for table lamps, ceramics, or books.

Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to protect the timber while avoiding placement near direct heat sources.
