Antique Victorian Walnut Bobbin Gallery Lamp Table

19th century
Description

A delightful Victorian walnut lamp table of exceptional decorative appeal. Standing on an elegant turned pedestal with shaped tripod legs, this charming piece is further enhanced by its unusual bobbin gallery frieze, a distinctive feature rarely found and one that immediately sets it apart from more conventional examples.

The circular walnut top displays attractive figuring and a rich warm colour developed over many years. Beneath, the finely turned column incorporates decorative mouldings and an unusual studded collar detail, all raised on graceful cabriole-inspired tripod supports which provide both stability and elegance.

Originally designed as a lamp or wine table, pieces such as this would have been positioned beside a sofa or armchair to hold an oil lamp, books, refreshments or decorative objects. Today it remains a wonderfully versatile piece, equally suited as a lamp table, occasional table or bedside table.

A particularly attractive example combining quality craftsmanship with an unusual and highly decorative design.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian bobbin gallery lamp table is a small occasional table characterized by turned wooden spindle drops around the apron and a central turned column supported by a tripod base, popular during the mid-to-late 19th century.

Craftsmen primarily utilised dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, which allowed for precise wood-turning techniques on central pedestals and decorative bobbin trims.

Authentic period examples feature hand-turned central columns, dovetailed or pegged joint construction beneath the tabletop, and natural wear or oxidisation across the timber grain.

Position the table beside a sofa or accent armchair to hold task lighting, or integrate it into a contemporary scheme as a plant or display stand to create textural contrast.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice a year along the wood grain, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking.
