Wreath brooches became prominent during the late Victorian era, around the 1890s. The circular wreath form symbolized eternal affection and unity, often combining colourful gemstones with foliage motifs rendered in gold and silver.

Late Victorian jewellery typically utilized 9ct or 15ct yellow gold, frequently topped with silver settings for diamonds to enhance their white appearance. Precious gemstones such as sapphires, rubies, and seed pearls were commonly paired with hand-cut accent diamonds.

Authentic pieces from the 1890s usually feature pin mechanisms extending slightly beyond the brooch edge, C-clasps or early safety catches, hand-set gemstones, and silver-topped gold mountings rather than modern platinum settings.

An antique brooch can be worn on contemporary jacket lapels, tailored coats, or silk scarves to add texture. Alternatively, fine jewellery pieces can be displayed in velvet-lined shadow frames or glass cloches as decorative cabinet items.

Clean gently using lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft-bristled brush, taking care not to submerge foil-backed settings if present. Store separately in a fabric-lined box to prevent harder stones like sapphires and diamonds from scratching metalwork.
