Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Derbyshire chair is a distinctive regional variant of the 17th-century English oak side chair, produced during the Jacobean and Commonwealth eras. Characterised by openwork back construction, arcaded rails, split balusters, and turned finials, these regional chairs reflect the vernacular furniture traditions of Northern England.

These chairs were constructed from solid English oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. Components such as back rails, legs, and stretchers were shaped using hand planes, lathes, and carving chisels, featuring solid wood panel seats set into sturdy frames.

Authentic period oak furniture exhibits hand-sawn timber marks, irregular peg placement, uneven wear around the footrests and stretchers, and deep oxidation within the grain. Joinery will show natural shrinkage over time, and original surfaces feature a dark, layered patina built up over centuries.

Period oak chairs function well as statement accent pieces in entrance halls, beside console tables, or positioned at the ends of contemporary dining tables. Their dark timber and strong geometric silhouettes create a grounding historical contrast against minimalist plaster walls or neutral linen upholstery.

Maintain regional oak chairs by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber. Keep pieces away from direct heat sources and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
