Antique Tabriz Carpet

1900 - 1920
Description

The large scale floral motifs are beautifully drawn on this antique Tabriz carpet, the vines and delicate flowers are really exquisite.  The colour palette with an off white main background lets the other natural dyes shine and showcases their colours.  The turquoise to green tone border colour is a beautiful dye and with the golds, pale blues, indigos and greens used for the floral motifs the whole balance of the carpet is quite wonderful.  Tabriz are famous for producing finely woven carpets, since the 15th century.  This early 20th century example uses designs from ancient Tabriz carpets and is in excellent condition all over.  The wool pile is excellent and high all over, no old repairs visible and original fringes are showing on this handsome carpet too.

Perfect to enhance any room, it is a durable and strong carpet for the living room, dining room, entrance hall or bedroom.  We supply underlay with every carpet to help keep the carpet flat and secure on the floor.

If you request a home visit we will happily bring this carpet for you to view in situ at a time and convenient day to suit you. We have offered this free, professional service for over 30 years, our team of experts have been working with antique carpets since 1990.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tabriz carpets originate from the historic city of Tabriz in northwestern Iran, renowned as one of the oldest weaving centres in Persia. These carpets are distinguished by high knot density, intricate floral or central medallion patterns, and harmonious colour palettes.

Traditional Tabriz carpets are hand-knotted using high-grade wool or silk pile spun onto a durable cotton or silk foundation warp and weft. The tight weave allows weavers to execute highly detailed curvilinear floral patterns and elaborate borders.

Authentic antique Tabriz carpets exhibit symmetrical or asymmetrical hand-tied knots visible on the underside, a short, dense pile, and precise curvilinear designs. Natural variations in dye saturation, age-appropriate wear, and a flexible handle also indicate authenticity.

An antique Persian carpet grounds modern or traditional interiors by introducing subtle texture, pattern, and historic depth. Positioning the rug beneath neutral contemporary seating or within a formal dining space creates a clear focal point.

Regular maintenance requires gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush attachment and periodic rotation to ensure even wear. Professional hand-washing by a specialist rug restorer and using a quality rug pad underlay protect the natural fibres from degradation.
