Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pedestal desk typically consists of a flat writing surface supported by two upright units, known as pedestals, which feature integrated drawers or cupboards flanking a central kneehole space. Popularised during the 18th century, this form provides structured organisation and substantial surface area for writing and study.

Classic desks of this period feature fine mahogany timber and veneers, often built over secondary softwoods like pine or oak for interior drawer construction. The writing surface is commonly fitted with a leather inlay, complemented by cast brass handles and mortise-and-tenon joinery.

Authentic historic examples display features such as hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, cast brass hardware, natural timber movement around panel joints, and historical wear along drawer runners. Most authentic pedestal desks are also constructed in three separate sectionsthe two pedestals and the topto allow for easier transport.

A mahogany pedestal desk functions well as a focal point placed centrally within an office or library, balanced by contemporary lighting and neutral textiles. Combining deep mahogany tones with modern upholstered seating or sleek brass fixtures creates a thoughtful dialogue between historical craft and modern design.

Dust the timber regularly with a dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish along the grain annually to maintain the finish. The leather top should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fading and conditioned occasionally using specialised leather care products.
