Scotch Mahogany Roll Top Desk

19th century
Description

This is a fine quality mahogany roll top desk from the very late Victorian period complete with the original working lock and escutcheon that is stamped 'THE VICTORIA DESK' 'WARRANTED SCOTCH MANUFACTURE'. Absolutely stunning to look at and for the most obvious reasons. The beautiful panelling to all sides is fielded (bevelled) this allows you to use it off the wall. The cast brass handles are all super quality and allow the drawers to pull very smoothly. The tooled leather top was replaced with a new one at the same time the French polish revitalised. The side drawers lock when the tambour is pulled down and the central drawer has it's own working lock and key. The desk has had light restoration in our work shops and would not have been much better the day it was made. Comes into three main pieces and will go through almost any doorway.

Height to Worktop - 77cm = 30 1/4 inches

Kneehole - Height - 62cm = 24 1/4 inches Width 58cm = 22 3/4 inches

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The roll top desk developed in the late eighteenth century as an evolution of the cylinder desk, featuring a flexible wooden tambour shutter made of narrow slats backed on canvas. Popularised widely during the nineteenth century, these desks offered a practical method to instantly secure paperwork and maintain order in professional and domestic studies.

Victorian roll top desks were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, often featuring secondary woods like pine or ash for drawer linings. The writing surfaces were commonly inset with gold-tooled leather or baize, while handles and lock mechanisms were crafted from solid brass.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, solid brass hardware, and original lever locks on the tambour mechanism. The underside and back panels generally show hand-sawn timber marks and age-appropriate oxidisation rather than uniform machine-milled finishes.

A traditional roll top desk can serve as a functional focal point in a modern home office or library when paired with minimalist brass lighting and contemporary seating. Position the desk against a neutral wall to allow the rich timber grain and classic profile to ground the room scheme.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the wood grain. To keep the tambour shutter operating smoothly, lubricate the wooden tracks gently with dry paraffin wax or beeswax, and avoid placing the desk near direct heat sources.
