Fine Tekke Rug, Central Asia, Circa 1890, 1.52m X 1.31m

19th century
Description

This Tekke rug has some very desirable features. The palette is unusually light and harmonious. The size is also quite rare, larger and wider than is typical of the so-called Tekke wedding rugs. This has allowed the weaver the luxury of spacing the major and minor guls in a generous way. The rug feels light and uncluttered, very easy on the eye. Wool quality and weave are fine and velvety. Good natural dyes. An additional bonus is that it has survived in remarkably good condition. Full pile with original ends and selvages intact. Professionally cleaned. This is a very pleasing and useful rug that could be used in many types of interior spaces.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tekke rugs are hand-knotted textiles woven by the Tekke tribe of Central Asia, characterised by repeating octagonal motifs called guls arranged across a rich red ground.

Traditional Tekke rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced wool for both the pile and the foundation, dyed with natural plant and mineral pigments.

Authentic pieces feature soft, finely hand-spun wool, a dense knot structure, a flexible handle, and subtle natural colour variations known as abrash.

A rich red Tekke rug acts as a grounding anchor in modern interiors, layering pattern under neutral minimalist furniture or enhancing dark wood schemes.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only attachment without a rotary brush, rotate the rug annually to balance foot traffic wear, and consult a specialist for deep cleaning.
