Description:

This is a good quality antique English early 18th century Georgian oak coffer, of primitive design, boasting its original carvings, with small proportions, circa 1700 - 1720, in excellent clean original condition. The oak chest is constructed with a triple panel top, within a moulded and reeded frame. The front of the oak trunk displays a primitive design, retaining the original lunette carvings along the top rail, with twin inset panels below, separated by a moulded mullion and stiles (feet) of different widths – we think the fact that the front is not symmetrical, adds to its primitive character. The lid opens on its original iron loop hinges to reveal a spacious interior, which features an internal oak candle box and lid on the right-hand side. The interior is clean and dry and offers plenty of practical storage space. The Georgian oak coffer also retains its original oak floor. The lid is secured by a working steel hasp, striking plate and a restored working lock and key. The coffer stands on the original stiles (feet). The back of the coffer retains its original rough-hewn panels along with the original floor and the frame is constructed with traditional pegged mortice and tenon joints. Overall, this Georgian oak coffer boasts a stunning colour; as it retains its original patination, built up from hundreds of years of cleaning and polishing.

Condition Report:

This is a good quality antique English early 18th century Georgian oak coffer, of primitive design, boasting its original carvings, with small proportions, circa 1700 - 1720, in excellent clean original condition. Nominal old marks to the top and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Such old use marks are inevitable and perfectly acceptable due to its age and use it has received. The interior is clean, dry, and usable. The coffer retains its original lid, floor, sides and back. The oak chest also retains the original iron loop hinges. The coffer also incorporates a working steel has and restored lock and working key. The coffer stands on extended stiles (feet) and the carvings to the front rail are original. The Georgian oak coffer is solid in joint; it does not wobble on the floor and is ready to use. Considering the age of this coffer, it is in good condition. It is rare to find a coffer of this period in such clean condition.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A joined oak coffer is a wooden storage chest constructed using frame-and-panel joinery, held together with mortise and tenon joints and wooden pegs rather than modern nails.

18th-century coffers were constructed from local hardwoods such as English oak, utilising hand-planed panels, hand-forged iron hardware, and dowels to allow timber movement over time.

Authentic period coffers display hand-hewn timber textures, wooden peg construction, hand-forged iron lock plates, and uneven saw marks consistent with pre-industrial woodworking.

An antique coffer can be positioned at the foot of a bed, used as a central coffee table, or placed in a hallway as a functional storage bench to contrast with modern decor.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish periodically, while maintaining stable humidity levels away from direct heat.
