Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Shield back dining chairs were popularised in late 18th-century England by cabinetmaker George Hepplewhite. Characterised by an openwork splat shaped like an upright shield, these chairs frequently feature carved motifs such as wheat sheaves, Prince of Wales feathers, or classical urns.

Georgian cabinetmakers primarily utilised dense mahogany timber joined with traditional mortise and tenon frame construction. Seats were typically constructed with removable drop-in timber frames or stuffed-over seats secured directly to internal corner blocks.

Authentic Georgian chairs exhibit hand-cut joinery, hand-planed underside surfaces, and age-consistent wear along the stretchers and armrests. Period examples feature dense, unveneered mahogany framing and hand-carved details rather than machine-moulded splats.

Georgian dining chairs create direct visual contrast when paired with modern stone, glass, or light oak dining tables. Reupholstering the drop-in seats in neutral linen or geometric textiles integrates these historic timber frames into contemporary settings.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and applying clear beeswax polish annually to protect the surface finish. Position chairs away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or joint movement.
