Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Giltwood console tables from the 18th century are defined by their elaborate hand-carved wooden frames coated in gold leaf, designed to be placed flat against a wall. They frequently feature Rococo motifs such as acanthus leaves, C-scrolls, and central shell carvings, topped with heavy marble slabs.

The structural frame was typically carved from softwoods such as pine or lime wood, which were coated in gesso before water-gilding with thin gold leaf. The tabletops were fitted with hand-cut marble slabs, often in distinctive green, white, or red varieties.

Authentic pieces demonstrate hand-carved joinery underneath, natural wear to the gold leaf showing red or white bole gesso beneath, and hand-cut slate or marble undersides. Modern reproductions tend to use plaster mouldings rather than hand-carved timber.

Place the table against a plain wall in an entryway, hallway, or drawing room to serve as a focal point. Balance the intricate gilded carving by pairing it with a minimalist modern mirror or contemporary artwork hung directly above.

Giltwood should never be cleaned with water or liquid polishes, as moisture dissolves the underlying gesso; soft dry dusting with a feather duster or soft brush is recommended. Marble tops should be wiped clean with a damp, pH-neutral cloth and protected from acidic liquids.
