Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century pedestal desk typically features a central kneehole flanked by two vertical pedestals containing drawers, topped with a flat writing surface often inset with leather. Constructing these pieces from solid or veneered mahogany was common practice throughout the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian eras.

These desks were predominantly crafted using mahogany, oak, or walnut frames, often featuring a hand-tooled leather writing skiver on top. Hardware typically consisted of cast brass handles, including swan-neck, bail, or wooden knob designs.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, original brass locks or keyholes, and natural age-related wear to the timber and leather insert. The pedestals are usually three separate sections (two pedestals and a top desk frame) designed to facilitate easier transport.

Position the desk as a focal point in a dedicated study or home office, pairing it with either a modern ergonomic chair or a period desk chair. Neutral wall tones and minimalist brass desk lighting complement the dark timber tones while maintaining a functional workspace.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish along the grain occasionally to maintain moisture in the timber. Leather inserts should be conditioned with dedicated leather balm and kept away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
